Zen Pinball Party Re: Dragons

Zoltan Vari returns! With a more kid-friendly table, sure, but it's still quite good regardless! Out of the four tables that released at the launch of Zen Pinball Party, I was attached to this one the most; even though I'm already a fan of the movies this machine is based on, I can still see people unfamiliar with the franchise loving this table. For a table aimed at younger players, there's some very inventive use of playfield space on this game, including a cross ramp bumper shot (which you almost never see!) and a giant rotating upper playfield reminiscent of early 90s Williams machines like Gilligan's Island. I think this playfield is implemented better here, however; it feels satisfying to keep shooting the left and right ramps and have the ball continuously sent to different directions, and the catapult rampage mode makes this a particularly fun feature.

Speaking of early 90s tables, multiball is remarkably simple to get to on this table, and it very much reminds me of how multiball was handled on those tables. You just have to keep shooting the ramps, and eventually, the ball will be locked. Lock 3 balls and shoot the scoop, and you've got an addictive 4-ball multiball where you first shoot either ramp to collect a jackpot, then have to load the catapult for a 4x super jackpot. The strategy here comes in the form of the spinner, which you can only hit from the upper right flipper and increases the jackpot value. If you make this spinner shot enough times, multiball becomes the highest scoring feature in the game and one of the best multiball modes Zoltan has done so far.

However, multiball leads me to my one major complaint with this table - score balancing between multiball and the wizard mode is just completely off. Often times I put off trying to complete the three tasks listed on the center of the playfield so I can just keep playing the main multiball, and I don't think that's what Zoltan intended. The mega jackpots collected with each ramp shot during the wizard mode are worth 4 million points each, which I could easily score far more from any of the side modes or a well-played multiball with a high jackpot value. It's somewhat odd to me that the wizard mode, which takes more effort to get to, scores less than the multiball which is simpler to activate - but maybe I'm missing something.

Overall, Dragons is a refreshing return to form for Zoltan, proving that he continues to have creative ideas. This is a table I could easily recommend to a younger audience who wants to get into pinball - it's not as easy as My Little Pony, but also not as difficult as some of Zoltan's other work. It hits a perfect medium. This table gets a 4/5 from me; I would've given it a perfect 5/5, but feel that the scoring balance just kinda gets in the way of an otherwise great table.

Glad I'm not the only one noticing this recent trend. Part of me dislikes it, and part of me thinks it's fine. I think Zoltan's tables, while I absolutely love them as an advanced player, aren't the most welcoming tables around - and making the games' scoring more front-heavy is a fair change. But it also makes me wonder why I should even be going for other objectives when I know that they won't score as much.
